The Berkeley Design Review Committee is scheduled to review plans tonight for the four-story apartments at 2403 San Pablo Avenue in Southwest Berkeley, Alameda County. Urban Development + Partners, the project owner, hopes to start construction by the third quarter of this year.

The 50-foot tall structure will yield 53,000 square feet, including 39 condominiums and 600 square feet for retail. Parking will be included for 24 cars and 39 bicycles. Residents will benefit from 10,200 square feet of on-site open space between the ground floor and rooftop courtyards. Twelve units will have a private patio.

Studio KDA is the project architect. Facade materials include cement siding, exposed concrete, sealed natural wood, and painted plaster.

The developer is partnering with Urban Moshav, a non-profit development partner for Jewish cohousing. The San Pablo project will be the firm’s first complex, which they hope will provide residence for a “diverse in age, income, family structure, and Jewish observance.”

The firm application for the four-story infill was filed in December of 2021. Initially, the developer had hoped to receive approval and start construction in 2022, in which case the complex could have opened this year. Now, the developer hopes to receive approval and start construction by the third quarter of this year and open in early 2026.

UD+P highlights that the project will be within walking distance of two synagogues in the city. Demolition will be required for the former Omega Salvage store facility.

The meeting is scheduled to start tonight, Thursday, April 18th, at 6:30 PM. The event will be held in person at the North Berkeley Senior Center at 1901 Hearst Avenue. For more information about how to attend and participate, visit the meeting agenda here.

  1. The only positive thing I can say about the development is it is better then what’s there right now which is not saying much.
