The San Leandro Planning Commission is scheduled to review a small affordable housing proposal at 98-100 Castro Street in Old San Leandro, Alameda County. Habitat for Humanity is expected to develop the currently vacant parcel with three units. The public event will be held in person at the San Leandro Civic Center tonight.

Berkeley-based Rangr Studio is responsible for the design. Illustrations show three detached homes with simple rectangular floor plans, Hardie-panel cladding, and asphalt roofing. Cedar wood will be a natural accent material along the porches and gutter. Each unit will be capped by rooftop solar panels to help generate renewable energy on-site. Landscaping will include a 45-inch redwood, three strawberry trees, and three western redbud trees.

The three two-story homes will be priced as affordable to buy for moderate-income households. The front house will contain two bedrooms, while the rear two structures will have three and four bedrooms. Parking will be included for three cars.

The 0.17-acre property is located along Castro Street between Washington Avenue and East 14th Street. Residents will be within walking distance of the commercial center in old San Leandro. For regional transit, the San Leandro BART Station is 15 minutes away on foot.

The meeting is scheduled to start tonight, Thursday June 6th, at 7PM. For more information about how to attend and participate, visit the meeting agenda here.

  1. The design is sad and looks like stacked container ship boxes with a slanted roof. The front building has the highest side close to the property next door maximizing the negative shading effect on it. Please make some adjustments – truly depressing housing.
