Resources for Community Development has opened a six-story and 87-unit project located at 2001 Ashby Avenue in South Berkeley. The project, named after Councilwoman Maudelle Miller Shirek, was first brought in 2021, with ground-breaking occurring in 2022. Delays caused the building to overshoot its projected opening date in 2024, but the project has now made it to completion and is moving in tenants.
The combined residential and commercial aspects of the building will total more than 100,000 square feet. The ground floor retail space will be operated by the South Berkeley non-profit Healthy Black Families. Meanwhile, the residential unit composition will include one manager’s unit and 86 affordable units, designated for residents earning equal to 20-80 percent of the area’s median income. 12 of the units will be set aside for unhoused people to move into stable housing.

The building is located at the corner of Ashby Avenue and Adeline Street, immediately across from the Ashby BART station. This position gives tenants great access to not only BART, but several intersecting bus lines, and nearby retailers such as the Berkeley Bowl. The Maudelle Miller Shirek Community Building is one of several new mid and high-rise projects being developed along the Adeline/Shattuck corridor between Ashby and Downtown Berkeley, and both housing and retail access will continue to develop in the next few years.

Great news. Now do all of the parking lots surrounding the Ashby BART area including the Adeline commercial corridor and double or triple the height.
