The project team and local officials gathered together late last week for the grand opening of Casa Canal at 3301 Kerner Boulevard in San Rafael. The ceremony welcomed 41 new units of permanent affordable supportive housing to the city within the three-story apartment complex. Eden Housing is the project sponsor.

Van Meter Williams Pollack is responsible for the design. The team took on the task of adaptively reusing the office complex to create 41 apartments, including 32 studios, eight one-bedrooms, and a two-bedroom manager’s unit. The project now includes 40 units of permanent housing designated for formerly unhoused residents. On-site services will provide supportive and mental health care for residents.

The development utilized the State program known as Project Homekey to use Federal CARES Act funding to purchase the property in late 2020. Internal renovations transformed the former three-story office building and surface parking, with construction officially starting in 2023.

The property is located on Simms Island, a former island dominated by housing and industrial neighborhoods. The immediate area around 3301 Kerner Boulevard is predominantly housing, with a nearby grocery store next to the Marin Health and Wellness Campus.
