Two complementary affordable developments are now completed on adjacent sites at 237 and 253 Race Street in San Jose’s Sunol-Midtown neighborhood. The project entitled Bellarmino Place opened doors to 116 affordable units last fall. Meanwhile, the project entitled Alvarado Park opened 90 senior affordable housing units just last week. Both buildings were developed by the Santa Clara Housing Authority, with The John Stewart Company stepping in as the property managers.
Bellarmino Place occupies a 1.44-acre site between Grand Avenue and Race Street. The building rises a total of six stories, with two stories of above-grade podium parking and four stories of residential floors above. The units are to be broken down into 57 one-bedrooms, 30 two-bedrooms, and 29 three-bedrooms. Of these, 24 are designated as Permanent Supportive Housing, helping homeless and special needs tenants secure permanent housing. Residential amenities will also include property management offices, laundry facilities, community rooms, and outdoor open spaces.

Alvarado Park’s senior housing is also located between Grand Ave and Race St. Its building rises five stories, with only a single story of garage parking below four stories of residential space. The available units will consist of 83 one-bedrooms and 7 two-bedrooms, focusing on smaller senior units. This project also includes 23 Permanent Supportive Housing units, addressing the need for secure housing for homeless and disabled seniors. Residential amenities include property management offices, laundry facilities, community rooms, library, and outdoor open spaces with gardening plots.
Both buildings share an exterior design scheme, with a blue and white façade articulated by balconies and framed windows. Exterior materials will include dark blue and white cement panels, with lighter blue, grey, and white wood panel siding on the upper stories.
