Renderings are out for the planned eight-story residential development at 2590 Bancroft Way, Southside, Berkeley. The residential project will border the UC Berkeley campus, located immediately across from Hearst Gymnasium, between Bowditch Street and Telegraph Avenue. Ruegg & Ellsworth are the property owners.
The development requires the demolition of an existing two-story structure. The 13,130 square foot parcel will be occupied by the eight-story building, leaving 2,570 square feet of usable open space. 87 apartments will be produced, of which 54 are studios, and 33 are two-bedrooms. Five units will be sold as affordable to very low-income households. The housing is sure to attract the many university students in need of housing. Storage will be included for 40 bicycles. 4,350 square feet of commercial space on the ground level, opening three tenant spaces to the busy sidewalk area.
Trachtenberg Architects is responsible for the design. The renderings illustrate most of the facade clad with thin white and yellow-white painted bricks. Dark metal panels and wood-look porcelain planks will be used as accents to frame the residential windows. Bay window features punctuate the exterior from the third level up to the rooftop, where wood-look porcelain covers the shared amenity rooftop deck.
The Miller Company is responsible for landscape architecture.
Preliminary recommendations are for the Design Review Committee to approve the project with conditions. Committee will be reviewing the proposal today from 7 pm to 11 pm. You can find details on how to watch the meeting here.
