Preliminary plans have been filed to convert the former residence of Henry J. Kaiser into an event space at 664 Haddon Road in Cleveland Heights, Oakland. The century-old home could host small events for 20 to 40 attendees. Kaiser Permanente purchased the site in early 2017.
The application requests a minor Conditional Use Permit to operate “Community Assembly Civic Activities” from the site. The permit stipulates that Kaiser will be allowed to host a maximum of 20 events per year, exclusively for company-sponsored events. The applicant expects events to average 20 attendees, with a maximum of 40 people per event.
The permit also addresses what will be the biggest concern for neighbors of 664 Haddon Road: parking. The applicant writes that “for events greater than 20 attendees, ride sharing services will be engaged for drop off and pickup between the offsite parking facility,” 1.6 miles away at 1800 Harrison Street, “to the House.”
The local William E. Schirmer designed the two-story building for Kaiser in 1924. Schirmer’s work reflects an Italian Renaissance Revival style with detailed ornamentation, cladding, and recesses. Kaiser lived in the site from 1924 through 1946 before moving to Lafayette. During that period, the industrialist founded companies to do everything from roads and large-scale construction to building cars and WWII-era warships.
Kaiser Permanente was founded in 1945 by Henry Kaiser and Sidney Garfield. The healthcare company purchased 664 Haddon Road in March 2017 for $2.25 million and has pursued a city landmark status for the building.
The home is located at the corner of Haddon Road and Hillgirt Circle, nearly I-580 and ten minutes from Lake Merritt on foot.
