The Palo Alto Planning and Transportation Commission is scheduled to review plans for the six-story affordable teacher housing project at 3265 El Camino Real in Palo Alto, Santa Clara County. The proposal will bring 55 units to a narrow lot under a mile away from the California Avenue Caltrain station. Half Dome Capital is the project developer.

The developer has signed an agreement with the Palo Alto Educators Foundation so that local educators will have the right of first refusal for units once complete.

The 70-foot tall structure is expected to yield around 33,090 square feet, including 55 apartments and a 4,600 square-foot garage. Parking will be included for 31 cars via stackers and 59 bicycles. Unit types vary, with 30 studios and 25 one-bedrooms. Residential amenities will feature an entry lobby and rooftop deck.

SDTarch, formerly Trachtenberg Architects, is responsible for the design. As is familiar from the firm, the Palo Alto project has an earthen-toned exterior with four five-story bay windows facing the sidewalk. Facade materials will include color stucco, metal infill panels, and cementitious Hardie paneling.

The 0.17-acre parcel is in an appealing part of town along El Camino Real between Lambert Avenue and Portage Avenue. Several other projects hope to add hundreds of new homes to the area. Across the street, Oxford Capital Group has filed plans for a mixed-use complex with 382 homes next to a 136-key hotel at 3400 El Camino Real, and Acclaim Companies is planning a 380-unit complex at 3150 El Camino Real. Further off El Camino, Peninsula Land & Captital has filed a five-story infill at 300 Lambert Avenue, and the Sobrato Organization has plans to transform a former Fry’s Electronics store and strip mall into a mixed-use complex at 3200 Park Boulevard.

Seems like a good use for a surface parking lot to me.

  2. A great project. Reasonable scale and so important to provide housing for our teachers near where they work!
