Developers have filed an application request for demolition of a parking garage on the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center campus to make way for the construction of a new Behavior Health Services Center in Willow Glen, San Jose. The new psychiatric hospital is expected to cost nearly a quarter of a billion dollars. Santa Clara County will run the project.

The development will host inpatient hospital care as well as emergency and outpatient psychiatric services for children, adolescents, and adults. 77 beds will be produced across 190,000 square feet. Facilities and amenities are split between appropriate age groups. Some indoor and outdoor amenities include gardens, artificial turf, lounge area, and recreation yards at each level.

“This couldn’t be more welcome news,” said Santa Clara County Supervisor and HHC Chair Joe Simitian as quoted in a county press release. “This is the kind of acute care facility we’ve long needed in Santa Clara County for young people in crisis – a sanctuary where they can safely begin to heal, close to home.”

42 beds will be for adult inpatient care, 21 beds for inpatient care of 13 to 17-year-olds, and 14 beds for patients aged 12 or lower. An expected 400-person staff is expected to be necessary for full operations, divided between three shifts of 82-90 persons per shift. The development will include a 714-car garage.

The project features design by HGA Architects and the Cunningham Group. The structure is clad with terracotta and large glass panels. The four-story tall entry has a curtain wall facade flooding the atrium with natural lighting. The project will be topped with a basketball court and other recreational functions. RHAA is responsible for landscape architecture.

Groundbreaking is expected in August of 2021, with the opening anticipated by November of 2023. After completing the Behavior Health Services Center, the existing Don Lowe Pavilion building will be demolished, with no immediate plans to replace the development.
