Santa Clara County Superior Court has upheld approval for KT Urban to build the 19-story Moxy Hotel at 8 Almaden Boulevard in downtown San Jose. The development will add 272 new hotel rooms with retail to the urban core of Silicon Valley, packing inside the high-rise. The 225-foot tower will yield 146,282 square feet, with a Floor Area Ratio of 16.7. Guest rooms will occupy floors three to eighteen, while the ground level includes an open lounge and a restaurant with a bar. Guests and visitors alike will also have access to a bar on the 19th floor with skyline views.

The second floor will include a library, fitness center, and office space for the hotel employees.

C2K Architects are responsible for the design. The architects break up the curtainwall facade with silver fins and a vertical installation of light-toned masonry. The significant architectural context for the proposal is its immediate neighbor, the historic De Anza Hotel. The architects say of their work, “The design was inspired by the concept of two tango dancers. The geometry of the building and its slenderness echo the dancer’s lines as the intertwined towers respond to each other and engage the adjacent Hotel De Anza.”

The massing is carved along the southeastern corner to give more visibility to the adjacent De Anza hotel. The proposed structure responds to its neighbor, with a proposed canopy at the height of De Anza 1st level cornice, similarly hued stone cladding, this vertical fins evocative of the verticality of the Art Deco movement.

The development will bring activity, and a new function to the vacant lot and likely help bolster the block for its historic neighbor and itself. The tower honors the spirit of Art Deco and the 1931-built hotel’s legacy as skyline-defining by rising itself to the city’s height limit. No vehicular parking will be offered on-site, thanks to a deal between the Almaden Corner LLC and the neighboring Market and San Pedro Square garage.

The existing condition of the lot is surface parking. While an estimated completion date has not been announced, construction is expected to take a year and a half from ground-breaking.
