The 25th tallest skyscraper in San Francisco planned or built is One Front Street. The distinctive Shell-Haus-inspired office tower opened in the Financial District in 1979 between Battery and Market Street. One Front Street, formerly known as Shaklee Terraces, rises 538 feet tall above street level with design by Skidmore Owings & Merrill.
Today’s story is part of a weekly series on SFYIMBY to count down the 52 tallest towers in the Bay Area built or planned as of January 2021.
The 38-story structure yields 643,310 square feet, with typical floor plats offering 16,780 square feet. Parking for 290 vehicles is included on-site. The office floors are serviced by 17 elevators.
Skidmore Owings & Merrill are responsible for the design. The rolled-back facade features a series of rounded corners facing Market Street. Aluminum and black windows are used as the sole material choice, establishing a uniform pattern from the sidewalk up to the roof. The eye-catching rounded corners rise uniformly to the 32nd level, before tapering off between floors 33 through 36 to produce five outdoor decks.
The design is similar to the once-provocative Shell-Haus building in Berlin, Germany. The historic design by Emil Fahrenkamp was completed in 1931 to become an iconic example of early modernism and New Objectivity.
The Paramount Group is the property owner and office manager, having purchased the building in December of 2016 for $521 million. The property had been the headquarters of the Shaklee Corporation. The firm moved out in 2000 to Pleasanton. The structure is LEED Gold certified.
