A new residential project has been proposed at 1357 Fifth Street in West Oakland. The project proposal includes the development of hundreds of homes replacing a surface parking lot with 500 parking spaces. The parking lot is managed by Impark.

Martin Group is the project developer. The developer filed paperwork with the city June 9.

The project site is a parcel spanning an area of four acres. The project will constrict 421 units and 720 parking spaces on the parcel.

West Oakland’s Prescott could anticipate thousands of new homes in coming years. A brief look at the other proposed projects:

  • Panoramic Interests has approval to build a 1,032-unit project to replace a currently vacant industrial lot at 500 Kirkham Street.
  • Tidewater Capital has proposed a 289-unit project on another area surface parking lot at 533 Kirkham Street.
  • Mandela Station, a large-scale development on what is currently BART-owned surface parking, has been approved for nearly 800 homes and roughly 350,000 square feet of commercial space. The developer, a joint venture between Strategic Urban Development Alliance LLC (SUDA), China Harbor Engineering Co., MacFarlane Partners and Hensel Phelps Construction, says it is targeting October of this year to break ground.
  • The Michaels Organization has pitched Golden West, a 222-unit project proposed for another surface lot that has been held up by Oakland’s City Council in recent months.

Each of those projects sit less than a quarter mile from 1357 Fifth Street. The estimated construction timeline has not been announced. The project site sits about a block away from the West Oakland BART Station.

  1. It is great these projects are being built by the West Oakland Bart Station and they are actually increasing parking for those who still need to drive and park at Bart. The biggest problem I see with it is by the time most Bart trains get to West Oakland the trains are already full. Somehow in the future, they will need more cars or trains.

  2. Why do we need 720 parking spaces? Let’s make the area around West Oakland dense and walkable. We don’t need more cars. Otherwise, I’m waiting for a single project to break ground. 1666 7th had a splash opening ceremony, but I haven’t seen any movement yet. 801 Pine is still waiting on funding. It was supposed to start May 1st.

  3. Let’s fight all of this development! We’re good at that. Too much parking. Not enough free units. What about the drug addicts? Too much traffic. The dirt smells. We displace the homeless. Bring more money and opportunity and crime will go down. Best just leave things as they are…

    • I’m not fighting the development. Just suggesting that we don’t need that much parking. Parking costs anywhere from $50-100k per unit and increases the cost of units.
