Recent permit activity has surfaced for the proposed four-story affordable senior housing complex at 1904 Adeline Street in West Oakland, Alameda County. Development permits have been approved, and the city has issued demolition permits for the existing Friendship Christian Church building, and a new building worksheet has been filed. The church is responsible for the development through the Friendship Community Development Corporation.

The 36-foot tall structure will yield around 36,020 square feet for housing and parking. Of the 50 proposed dwellings, 35 will be one- to two-bedroom apartments, and 15 will be efficiency units. The podium garage will have a capacity for 44 cars, with additional space for eight bicycles.

Kodama Diseno Architects is responsible for the design. Illustrations show the contemporary podium-style complex above the brick-wrapped ground floor. Full-height windows provide visibility into a large community room, which is directly accessible from the sidewalk. The ground-level floorplan conforms to the right trapezoidal parcel, while the top three levels form an L-shaped floorplan angled around the landscaped courtyard, which is positioned ontop of the community room. Tanaka Design Group is the landscape architect.

The 0.5-acre property is on a block bound by Adeline Street, Chestnut Street, 18th Street, and 21st Street. Residents will be across from the West Oakland Public Library and close to De Fremery Park.

Construction is expected to cost $20.5 million according to the building worksheet application.

  1. Church was demoed a month back, looks like lots of work going on to get the site ready. Good to hear affordable senior housing.
