Alameda County has started accepting applications for affordable rental units in the Maudelle Miller Shirek Community Building in South Berkeley. The six-story project is offering 86 units across from the Ashby BART Station and near Berkeley Bowl. Prospective residents will have until February 12th to apply for the lottery drawing.
The six-story infill at 2001 Ashby Avenue contains over a hundred thousand square feet, including 86 affordable rental units, one manager’s unit, retail, and amenity space. MWA Architects is responsible for the design. Unit sizes will vary, with 18 studios, 21 one-bedrooms, 26 two-bedrooms, and 22 three-bedrooms. RCD Housing is the project’s developer.
Prospective residents can apply on the Alameda County Housing Portal here. For more information about the specifies of how to apply and check if you qualify for additional priority, visit the City of Berkeley’s website here.
The City specifies that preference will be given to applicants who have been displaced by BART Constriction in the 1960s to 1970s, households who were displaced by foreclosure since 2005, displaced by eviction within the past seven years, families, applicants at risk of homelessness or unhoused, current or former residents of redlined neighborhoods, and applicants who have parents or grandparents who lived or living in a historically redlined neighborhood.
