The City of Mountain View has approved a large mixed-use masterplan development at 675-685 East Middlefield Road within the East Whisman Precise Plan. The proposal would replace an existing low-slung office with a six-story office block and over eight hundred apartments. San Mateo-based Prometheus Real Estate Group is the project developer.
The proposed masterplan features five structures, including the six-story office block with 275,000 square feet, 1.2 million square feet across three residential buildings, 2,300 square feet of retail, and a 214,000-square-foot eight-story garage. An additional 317,500 square feet for parking will be included in the basement garages below the two market-rate apartment blocks. Of the proposed 836 units, 150 will be designated as affordable.
STUDIOS Architecture is responsible for office architecture, with residential buildings designed by SERA Architects. Place is the landscape architect. For the public, there will be a half-acre privately owned public open space along East Middlefield Road, next to the Northern market-rate apartments.
The office design shows a distinct modern flair, contrasting warehouse-sized windows framed by grey bricks, and a bold terrace corner carve-out to emphasize the lobby entrance. Black metal panels along the terraces provide an attractive contrast with the mass timber ceiling. The podium-style housing apartments will be wrapped with a contemporary facade comprised of bricks and wood-look composite panels.
The ten-acre property is located at the corner of East Middlefield Road and Ferguson Drive, close to the State Route 237 overpass. Future residents will be just ten minutes away from the Whisman Light Rail Station by foot or 15 minutes from the Mountain View Caltrain Station by bicycle. The site is also near the Middlefield Park masterplan, an approved project by Gooogle.
Prometheus Real Estate Group will be working with the Oakland-based development advisor Harvest Properties. The estimated cost and timeline for construction have yet to be shared.
