Preliminary plans have been filed to convert the former Consulate General of India –  San Francisco into housing at 540 Arguello Boulevard in the Lone Mountain neighborhood of San Francisco. The proposal would provide three units from the three-story commercial infill. Iyer & Associates Architects is responsible for the application.

The three-story structure spans around 9,600 square feet with off-street parking. The project application states the conversion would create five market-rate units, including three one-bedrooms, a three-bedroom apartment, and a four-bedroom apartment.

The existing structure was built as an office building in 1969. According to a file from a city-wide cultural resources survey, the Second Bay Traditional-style building has undergone heavy alterations and is not considered eligible for listing. The property is located along Arguello Boulevard between Anza Street and Geary Boulevard, across from the eastern edge of the Richmond District.

Earlier this year, the Consulate moved into an office building at 71 Stevenson Street, Suite 2200, in the Financial District, and is open by appointment only. For more information about the Consulate General of India in San Francisco, visit their website here.

Is it three units or five units? Paragraphs one and two disagree.
