Updated renderings have been revealed for a senior housing development at 6230 Claremont Avenue in Rockridge, Oakland. The project is expected to replace a vacant commercial structure across from a grocery store and several small shops with over two hundred units for senior residents. San Francisco-based Ellis Partners is the project applicant and co-owner with Spirit Living Group.

The 84-foot-tall structure is expected to yield around 269,000 square feet, including 139,700 square feet for housing, 30,400 square feet of amenities, and 35,900 square feet for parking. Once complete, the project will add 203 units to the neighborhood, including 179 apartments and 24 memory care units. Amenities will be spread across the complex, including two second-floor courtyards connected with a dining lounge, a rooftop terrace overlooking Claremont Avenue, a library, and ground-floor multipurpose amenity rooms.

BDE Architecture and Jones Architecture are listed as joint architects for the project. Illustrations show the mid-rise building segmented into three sections. The top two floors will be wrapped in darker textured metal panels. The exterior will be clad with brick veneer and glazed tiles.

The 1.06-acre parcel is on a triangular block bound by Claremont Avenue, Florio Street, and Auburn Avenue. Future residents will overlook the intersection with College Avenue and a 2015-rebuilt Safeway grocery store.

Demolition will be required for the existing structure, formerly occupied by the American National Red Cross, and rear-lot surface parking. The three-story structure is now vacant.

  3. even though i like the original MCM building, this design is much better than a lot of the cheap-looking developments here of late. nice curves, glazed tiles, planting bed. bravo.

  6. Please please please don’t let the Rockridge NIMBYs kill this. Let them remember that this is -senior- housing, so all of their friends in the hills can stay in the city when they downsize. Ellis Partners is well meaning and this is the finest facade I’ve seen in a year: all-brick with articulation and balconies. Elsewhere reporting that the neighborhood wants the height down to 55′. State Density Bonus throws that out because the state and this neighborhood especially is so regressive that they would rather let people go homeless than building mid-rise buildings in urban centers.

    Please oh please. This would be a great project!

    • Get involved! If you live in Oakland, write your council member letting them know you support the project.

    • Rockridge residents are responsible for killing thousands of units over the years. There is no excuse, no matter how petty, that they will use and leverage their relative wealth to stop people from having homes.
