Plans have been filed for an apartment complex at 50 Merrydale Road in San Rafael, Marin County. The project seeks to add a dozen apartments to a vacant parcel half a mile walk from the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Marin County Civic Center. Mill Valley-based August Place LLC is the project developer and owner.

The 36-foot-tall structure is expected ot yield around 21,700 square feet, including 13,960 square feet for housing and 6,010 square feet for the ground-level 12-car garage. The development will include 12 rental apartments, of which one will be deed-restricted as affordable to a low-income household.

San Rafael-based SKS Architects is responsible for the design. Illustrations show a vernacular residential complex with an articulated facade that visually breaks up the massing and reduces the sense of scale. The exterior will be clad with stucco, Hardie-board lap siding, and vertical board-formed concrete.
