Senior Affordable Housing Proposed for 1708 Harmon Street, South Berkeley

The pre-application has been filed for a five-story senior affordable housing project at 1708 Harmon Street in South Berkeley, Alameda County. The proposal will create 80 units just a few blocks from the Ashby BART Station. The Community Housing Development Organization of North Richmond is responsible for the application.

CHDC is working on behalf of the property owner, the Ephesian Church of God in Christ. The updated pre-application is a follow-up from a year earlier. The new plans include minor adjustments to unit capacity and parking. There will now be 80 apartments and parking for 62 cars in the ground-level garage.

The project will create 47,790 square feet between two buildings, one along Ellis Street and the other along King Street. The 80 units will be evenly divided across both sites.

Kodama Diseno Associates is responsible for the design. Facade materials will include redwood panels, stucco, board-formed concrete, and Hardie plank siding. The facade palette will be a restrained light tone with whites, greys, and orange-red. The two buildings will be connected to the existing church with a landscaped pedestrian plaza. A second-level community garden and deck will also be included on the structure facing Ellis Street.

The project spans an acre across most of the block bound by Alcatraz Avenue, Ellis Street, Harmon Street, and King Street. The existing church will remain, but an auxiliary building and former church structure are planned to be demolished.

An estimated timeline for construction and completion has not yet been established.
