A new design has been published for a park at 11th and Natoma in SoMa, San Francisco. The nearly half-acre site will be reimagined into a new open space for the growing neighborhood, especially for future residents at The Hub. SF Recreation and Parks Department is the project manager.

The San Francisco Public Works department is responsible for landscape architecture. While details for programming remain preliminary, the current iteration includes active space, gardens, a play area, and a dog relief area. A small half-size court for basketball and other sports will be located by 11th Street beside a structure expected to remain/. The primary pathway will bring pedestrians from 11th Street to Minna Street, passing quiet seating spaces, group gathering areas, and garden planting beds. A community plaza will be close to the school-age children’s play area. Adult fitness equipment is included at the park entrance by 11th and Natoma Street.
Once complete, the park will be open during typical park hours. Demolition will be required for 19,000 square feet of existing buildings.

The project budget is around $12.775 million, with $5.5 million for construction and $7.275 million for soft costs. An additional $110,000 will be used for art enrichment. Funding will come from the Eastern Neighborhood Development Impact fees, Market Octavia Development Impact Fees, Natoma Properties revenue, and the city’s Open Space Acquisition fund. Design work will continue through June of 2024, and construction is scheduled to start by the Spring of 2025 and completion by that winter.

Yes! More parks in SOMA. Sorely needed.
A waste of valuable property. Better the money be spent on affordable housing with a small area for tenants. This will be another lure for the bums that inhabit the streets. I can see the tents sprouting like mushrooms overnight.
A lot of dough for demo, grading, some lawn, and a buncha trees; but that’s government work for ya.

How could that possibly cost 12 million? We should be able to build out at least 3 similar sized parks for that price. My god. Super exited for this though.
The weather in that part of the city is usually sunny and warm, I would throw in a couple of palms.
