New building permits have been filed for the San Francisco Wholesale Flower Market at 901 16th Street in the Potrero Hill neighborhood, San Francisco. The market is a death-blow to the once-approved plan for a 395-apartment housing project. 901 16th Street LLC is listed as responsible for the development.
In February 2020, SF Curbed stated the housing proposal fizzled due to “the trifecta of SF housing nemeses, delays, soaring costs, and NIMBYs.”
The two-story flower market will yield 216,000 square feet, of which 90,900 square feet is dedicated to 150 parking spaces and 23 bicycles, and 125,000 square feet for commercial-industrial use. Jackson Liles is responsible for the design. The largest construction project will be an expanding parking lot. The rest of the structure will be painted an eye-catching purple.
The residential project was approved first in 2012 and most recently in 2016. The 395 houses along with ground-floor retail were split between two four-story and six-story structures. A historic brick structure was to be rehabilitated and expanded for office use.
San Francisco Flower Mart will be responsible for managing the new market space. The building rises beside Mission Bay, one block west of the UCSF medical campus and three blocks from the waterfront Chase Center stadium, home for the Golden State Warriors basketball team.
Construction is estimated to cost $40 million.
