City Council has granted approval for the six-story commercial office building at 901 El Camino Real in Redwood City, San Mateo County. The move comes two and a half years after the first public meeting for the Caltrain-adjacent redevelopment. JP Morgan, Kenson Ventures, and Minkoff Group are jointly responsible for the development.

The 102-foot-tall structure is expected to yield around 469,500 square feet, with 305,230 square feet for office space and 164,240 square feet within the three-level basement garage. Additional floor space will be set aside for a 6,600 square foot teen center multipurpose space. The master plan includes a 4,000 square foot public open space, across from the proposed Redwood City Caltrain Transit Center, to be called the Chrysanthemum Plaza.
HGA Architects is responsible for the architecture. The facade features a mix of articulation to visually reduce the perception of scale. Exterior materials will include the terracotta rainscreen, curtainwall glass, horizontal solar shades, and metal panels.

The development team is also expected to donate the property at 920 Shasta Street to the affordable housing developer, Abode Communities. Plans were approved in the same meeting this week for the 100-unit complex designed by David Baker Architects.
The 1.6-acre property is located along El Camino Real across from the future Caltrain Transit Center, the Broadway Street retail center, and the existing Sequoia Station strip mall. Plans to bring a high-density mixed-use neighborhood to the latter site with six structures appeared likely to materialize after the $73 million acquisition by Los Angeles-based developer Lowe, the project has been on hold.
