Oakland’s Design Review Committee is scheduled to review plans for a four-story residential infill at 1904 Adeline Street later today. The proposal will replace the existing religious facility with the 50-home Friendship Senior Housing development in West Oakland, Alameda County. The property owner is listed as the Geral Agee Ministries and the Friendship Community Development Corporation.

The 39-foot tall structure will yield around 38,270 square feet, with 25,800 square feet for housing and 10,960 square feet for the 44-car garage. Long-term parking will be provided for five bicycles. Most of the ground level will be occupied by the parking garage, with some room for a community space, storage, the lobby, a computer room, offices, and a kitchen.

Kodama Diseno Architects, a Berkeley-based firm, is responsible for the design. The podium-style design will be clad with cement plaster and brick veneer. The updated design of the side and rear walls changed the mix of stucco and Hardie board horizontal siding to be just smooth stucco. Tanaka Design Group is the landscape architect. The firm will be responsible for the streetscape improvements and the second-level courtyard.

IDA Structural Engineers will consult on the project, as well as Luk and Associates on civil engineering, LMR Engineers on MEP, and J.H. Fitzmaurice as the contractor. The property is on a block bound by Adeline Street, Chestnut Street, 18th Street, and 21st Street. Residents will be across from the West Oakland Public Library and close to De Fremery Park.

Demolition will be required for the existing religious facility, along with the merger of three lots. The plans were approved by the Planning Commission of Oakland in December 2018. Pastor Geral Agee is the minister of the Friendship Christian Church.
