Construction has started for Cherry Street Commons, a new five-story affordable housing complex at 1232-1244 Cherry Street in San Carlos, San Mateo County. The development is expected to bring nearly three dozen units for low-income families, developed by the joint partnership of Eden Housing and HIP Housing. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the project team alongside Mayor Sara McDowell, Congressman Kevin Mullen, State Senator Josh Becker, and Assemblymember Diane Papan.

Cherry Street Commons will eventually rise five floors to contain 33 apartments, a 21-car ground-level garage, and additional storage for 20 bicycles. Unit types will vary with 15 one-bedrooms, nine two-bedrooms, and nine three-bedrooms. Dwellings will be priced as affordable to low-income or moderate-income households. One unit will be set aside for the manager’s use. Residential amenities will include a community kitchen, media area, on-site laundry, a podium-top courtyard, and a rooftop deck.

Van Meter Williams Pollack is the project architect. Illustrations show a modestly well-designed contemporary Mediterranean-style complex with smooth stucco finish and clay tile roofing. The ground level is improved by decorative archways with blue tiles.

The roughly 0.3-acre property is located along Cherry Street between Laurel and Walnut Street, on a block bound by San Carlos Avenue. Future residents will be close to the city’s commercial corridor along Laurel Street, as well as San Carlos Caltrain Station, just two blocks away.

Demolition of the existing office building and six-unit apartment complex has been completed. Construction is expected to last less than two years, with the first residents to move in as early as 2026.
