A new meeting has been scheduled to request an extension for the senior housing project previously planned at 2800 Mitchell Drive in Walnut Creek. The Project was previously reported on by SF YIMBY in August of last year, when it was undergoing its original approvals. A successful bid at the new meeting would extend those approvals to compensate for the project’s delayed timeline.

The project is a large, 9.4-acre development, subdivided into two lots of 6.5 and 2.9 acres each. Lot 1 would consist of four apartment buildings, containing 254 senior housing units between them and an additional recreation building on site. Meanwhile, Lot 2 would consist of a 136-bed residential care facility, referred to as “Oakmont of Shadelands.” The care facility units are to be grouped together in a single building, organized around a central courtyard.
The original application had required a change to the land use designation of the area from a commercial business park to mixed-use residential. This pivot is representative of several new projects that have shifted the development focus of cities from commercial to residential in recent years. This particular location does not have high walkability, but is well-positioned for vehicle access to retail and recreation areas for future residents to take advantage of.
Mehrdad Haji-Sharifi is responsible for the specific layout and designs of the two lots, which are unchanged from the previous proposal. If granted, the project will receive a two-year extension, making the design review approval valid through August 2027. Details about how to view the meeting can be found here.

Nine acres? This should fit at least 1,000 people. That building is way too short. Six stories should be the minimum!
