The Huntington Hotel is set to reopen at its historic building located at 1075 California Street in San Francisco’s Nob Hill neighborhood. The hotel originally closed in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, with no clear timeline for reopening. However, following a renovation project in association with Flynn Properties and Highgate, the hotel is on track to reopen its doors in early 2026.

Specifics of the interior renovation were executed by Singular Builders and BAR Architects & Interiors, restoring and updating the iconic building to fit both modern standards and historic authenticity. While still undergoing these renovations, the building was added to the Historic Register in September of 2025.
Keeping true to the historic registry designation, the property’s original Georgian architecture has been preserved wherever possible. This includes plasterwork ceilings, boiserie panels, and window designs.

After the renovations, the twelve-story Huntington Hotel will offer 143 guest rooms and suites, including a nearly 1,500 square foot Penthouse. Other amenities include the appropriately named Nob Hill Spa and ‘The Big Four’ restaurant.
The restaurant holds closely to the original hotel’s design, and it takes its name from the hotel’s founder, Collis P. Huntington, one of the Big Four railway tycoons of the old west. In contrast, the spa will be reimagined from the original design, with plans to span three levels, with an indoor pool, an outdoor terrace, 12 treatment rooms, saunas, steam rooms, a relaxation lounge, and a fitness center.
Aside from its luxurious amenities, the Huntington Hotel’s history places it within San Francisco’s cultural landscape. Originally built in 1922, it was designed by Weeks and Day as the Huntington Apartments, and it was converted to a hotel by real estate developer Eugene Fritz after a deal to purchase the property in 1924. The property operated largely unchanged until Fritz’s grandchildren sold it in 2011 to Singapore-based Grace International. Since then, the property changed hands several times before closing indefinitely in 2020. In March 2023, Highgate Hotels and Flynn Properties partnered to take over.

In the golden eras between the hotel opening and the first sale, the hotel was known for hosting celebrities from all parts. Hollywood’s Marlene Dietrich and Claudette Colbert were visitors, and Truman Capote was a regular attendant. Other types of visitors ranged from opera singers to foreign dignitaries.
Located in Nob Hill, a neighborhood known for its grand architecture, leafy parks, and cable car crossings, the hotel is still centrally located. Guests will be just a short walk from Union Square, Chinatown, and the Financial District, connecting them to every part of the city. The restoration and reopening mark the revival of a true San Francisco icon.

One of the best locations in the city, beautiful rooms, and a beautiful building… we can expect a nightly rate under $200, right? RIGHT?
Always liked the idea of a staycation in the city I live in, but I’d rather splurge on the food and drinks. The sample images are enticing, though.
