Plans for a major affordable housing development in Oakland have gradually progressed since early 2022. However, the current site of 430 Broadway in Oakland’s Jack London neighborhood is the former Alameda County Probation Offices. A new zoning worksheet filed with the City of Oakland would allow the demolition of some existing structures and the placement of interim site improvements.

The three main buildings to eventually fill the site are currently entitled A, B, and C. In March of this year, SF YIMBY reported on the approvals for building B specifically, with information about the remaining buildings coming through in earlier articles.

All three buildings are being developed as part of a joint venture between Related California and the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation. When completed, the project will provide nearly 200 affordable units to the site

Building A will be a five-story residential infill at the corner of 5th Street and Franklin Street, overlooking the freeway. Y.A. Studio is responsible for the design, with renderings of narrow floor-to-ceiling windows across the clean grey exterior.

Building B is another five-story building, positioned at the corner of 4th Street and Franklin Street. David Baker Architects is overseeing this building’s design, with renderings showing a smooth white exterior articulated by wood-paneled balcony-terraces.

Building C will create the most units from the parcel, with 71 units across the five-story complex. The 58-foot-tall structure will include an alternating white cement panel and masonry-patterned façade design.

Though filed under separate permits, the structures will be built around a publicly-accessible central plaza. The park will feature a playground, public art, seating, and an open plaza space.

The property is a block bound by Broadway, Franklin Street, 4th Street, and 5th Street. The site is next to the I-880 overpass, which separates Jack London Square from Downtown Oakland. Future residents will have the benefit of walking distance access to the shops and restaurants in both the Jack London Square neighborhood and Oakland’s Chinatown. Meanwhile, the 12th Street and Lake Merritt BART Stations are both accessible for longer-distance commutes.
