Plans have been reviewed for a five-story car-oriented apartment complex at 556 El Camino Real in Burlingame, San Mateo County. The proposal will replace a 14-unit complex with 21 apartments and a 34-car garage. Roman Knop is the property owner.
The 52-foot-tall structure will yield around 29,010 square feet of housing. Residence sizes will vary with three one-bedroom units, 12 two-bedroom units, and six three-bedroom units. Parking is included for 34 cars in an underground garage and two surface parking spaces for guests and services.
San Carlos-based RSS Architecture is responsible for the design. The infill conforms to the 0.35-acre property, with an articulated facade broken up by setbacks, contrasts of white and black stucco, and terraces wrapped around the top floor. The angular rear of the lot makes for a narrow corner for some residents.
Consulting Structural Engineers will be consulting for the project. Plans were first filed with Burlingame in early 2014. Throughout the years, the project facts have remained unchanged while the design has evolved.
Demolition will be required for the existing two-story, 14-unit apartment complex. Crews will need to remove one eucalyptus tree, and construction is expected to last around 22 months.
