Construction crews have nearly topped out Aquino, the eight-story apartment complex at 486 West San Carlos Street in San Jose, Santa Clara County. Once complete, the project will add 278 new apartments just a couple of blocks away from Discovery Meadow in Downtown San Jose. Urban Catalyst is the project developer.
Swenson Builders is the general contractor responsible for building the project. The structure features a three-story concrete podium with five floors of wood-frame construction. Crews are finishing the wood framing on the top floor, with facade installation expected to start later.

Once complete, the eight-story structure is expected to produce 278 units, of which 14 will be deed-restricted affordable units for very low-income households. Unit types will vary, with 211 smaller units with 0-1 bedrooms and 67 two- or three-bedroom residences. Parking will include 167 cars and 88 bicycles. The ground floor will include the internal garage and a community room.
BDE Architecture is responsible for the design. While facade installation has not yet started, the wood framing already shows the accordion-style rounded edge that will soon overlook West San Carlos Street and Josefa Street. The exterior will receive a barcode-inspired facade treatment with vertical panels and two clusters of private balconies.

The 0.83-acre property is on a lot bounded by West San Carlos Street, Josefa Street, Delmas Avenue, and Auzerais Avenue. Future residents will be just a couple of blocks from Discovery Meadow in Downtown San Jose and less than 15 minutes on foot from Diridon Station, currently served by Caltrain and VTA light rail, with future plans to connect the site to the BART transit network.
Across the street, Urban Catalyst is nearly finished with the eight-story Marriott TowneSuites Hotel at 495 West San Carlos Street. A couple of parcels down from Aquino is 470 West San Carlos Street, where Urban Catalyst has also started site work for Gifford, a very similarly designed eight-story residential complex for senior housing.
