Construction work is wrapping up for a four-story office block at 250 California Drive in Burlingame, San Mateo County. The building has seen steady progress over the last two years adjacent to the city’s Caltrain Station. The Dewey Land Company is responsible for the application.

The 55-foot tall structure will yield around 56,540 square feet with 33,870 square feet for offices, 5,390 square feet of ground-level retail, and 12,030 square feet for the automated 98-car garage. Additional parking is provided for a mere 15 bicycles. MBH Architects is responsible for the design. The brick exterior and warehouse-style floor-to-ceiling windows express the area’s industrial history. California Drive remains a destination for car dealerships. The design includes an homage to the Severn Lodge Dairy mural on 220 California Drive.

Jett Landscape Architects are responsible for designing the open space. The streetscape will be improved with festoon lighting, seating, planters, and trees. Additional open space will be offered for employees, with two rooftop decks looking over the thoroughfare and the Caltrain Station. Luk & Associates are the civil engineers, and ZFA is consulting for structural engineering.

The structure covers nearly 90% of the 0.26-acre lot. Once used as a surface parking lot for a nearby dealership, the property is in a central location for the city of Burlingame, immediately adjacent to the regional train station, by SamTrans stops, and close to the thriving Burlingame Avenue retail artery.

The proposal is close to the construction job at 220 Park Road, a new six-story office project that will bring a small public park to the retail and surface parking-dominated downtown core. The proposal started in 2017, with construction work beginning in earnest by late 2020 or early 2021. Currently, the exterior work is nearly complete, with interiors remaining. The offices are expected to open by next year.
