Gladstone has announced plans for a new expansion of their current location at 1650 Owens Street in Mission Bay, San Francisco. The nonprofit life sciences research organization has plans to increase its floorplan capacity by over a third, creating new laboratories and room for around two hundred new employees. Construction is expected to begin late next year.

DGA is overseeing the design. The California-based firm specializes in technical facilities for life sciences, technology, healthcare, and education. DGA is the executive architect for the adjacent life sciences project at 1450 Owens Street. Further afield, DGA is working on projects in Burlingame, Emeryville, and Sacramento.

The six-story project will be expanded from 200,000 square feet to 275,000 square feet. The additional floor area will produce approximately 44-47 laboratories, up from the existing 32 labs. With this additional space, Gladstone hopes to hire around 200 more employees to expand its current roster of 351 scientists, 175 trainees, and 138 researchers.

Gladstone is a financially independent 45-year-old non-profit research organization. The organization focuses on biomedical and technological innovation with the stated vision to “overcome unsolved diseases.” The organization has an academic partnership with the neighboring and ever-growing UCSF biomedical research and hospital campus.

For the press release announcing the office expansion, Gladstone president Deepak Srivastava, MD, said, “There has never been a better opportunity to solve some of the world’s most devastating diseases. But to do that, Gladstone needs to grow.”

For the same press release, San Francisco Mayor London Breed shared that “Gladstone has long been a pillar of scientific innovation and a great example of the amazing things that are happening in San Francisco that are making a real difference in people’s lives all over the world. This expansion will not only allow them to continue to be at the forefront of cutting-edge research but also be a part of the revitalization of our city and our economy.”

Construction is expected to start in late 2024 and finish by 2026, with an estimated budget of around $160 million.

  1. These plans are a bit wild. I walk through those buildings often and it doesn’t seem like there’s enough space to fit these plans… they are cutting into pedestrian walkways and outdoor seating area for this. Guess these plans are cheaper than acquiring nearby surface lots for development…

    • pretty sure all the nearby surface lots either belong to UCSF or are spoken for for BMR housing. unless you are thinking on the other side of 7th St – would love to see some of those developed

  2. Since there will be more employees, Is there any allotments for secure bike parking either in the same building or close?
