Preliminary permits have been filed for a new townhome development at 1001 South 5th Street just south of Downtown San Jose, Santa Clara County. The project will bring for-sale apartments to an industrial property occupied by several retailers and businesses. HMH is responsible for the application.
The pre-application specifies that the existing buildings will be demolished, and the lot will incorporate an abandoned railroad right-of-way into the project. Once complete, the roughly six-acre site will be transformed into 158 townhomes.
The large property is located along South 5th Street extending from Martha Street to Keyes Street. The site is close several new apartments, the Bestor Art Park, and the retail-lined South First Street thoroughfare. Future residents will be close to Downtown San Jose, either ten mintues by bicycle, 15 minutes by bus, or 30 minutes on foot.
Gambord Industries is listed as the property owner according to the Santa Clara Assessor Office data collected by the San Francisco Chronicle. The Schoennauer Company, an architecture and planning consultant based in the South Bay, is representing HMH with the application. The project team has yet to reply to a request for comment from YIMBY.
