New building permits have been filed for a 20,000-seat multi-purpose sports stadium at 11 7th Street in Sacramento’s Railyards District. The updated plans for Sacramento Republic FC show the team is shifting away from the initial 12,000-seat iteration expected for the site toward a larger canopy-capped facility. The application comes several months after the groundbreaking ceremony held by the team last August.

Wilton Rancheria and the Sacramento Republic FC are jointly responsible for the project. According to the team’s press release, Wilton Rancheria will be the first tribal nation to own a club and stadium. Once complete, the complex is expected to contain at least 20,000 seats, making it the largest sports venue in Sacramento. MANICA is the design architect, working with the architect of record, House & Robertson Architects.

Republic FC Managing Partner Kevin Nagle emphasized in the press release that the increased project will provide “a roof over every seat, safe standing for our supporters, and world-class amenities throughout…”

“Building bigger is a catalytic investment in the long-term transformation of downtown Sacramento,” said Chris Franklin, COO for Wilton Rancheria. “Wilton Rancheria is bringing the capital, vision, and execution needed to turn this site into a destination that drives economic impact, community connection, and sustained growth for the entire region.”

Initial grading work started on the stadium last August, with foundation work expected to start after April this year. The previous timeline projected the stadium would finish in early 2027, though it’s unclear how much the increased size will push back completion. The project is also expected to host performances and concerts, transforming the space to accommodate up to 27,000 attendees for special events.

    Very nice!

  2. It’s gonna be really nice to watch the Republic play and enjoy the concerts. The design is exceptional!!

  3. Ugh!
Don’t make a Levi’s stadium mistake and leave off a top.
Anyone who has been to Sacramento in summer know what HOT means!
And like the nosebleed section at Levi’s, where fans are having strokes, this stadium should build a tarp/cover, so the sun and heat is not blazing on everyone

    • So true! A roof and or dome allow you to make money year round. Makes no sense to build a stadium without one these days!

      • It actually makes tons of sense to not build a roof in many markets because there is virtually no market for indoor events between arena sized events and NFL stadium sized events and because building a full roof massively increases costs. Nobody is going to build a $1B roofed stadium whose sole tenant is a minor league soccer team and where there is a large modern indoor arena just down the street.

    • Reading is key. There is a canopy covering every seat.

      • Look at the pictures.
Half the crowd is frying to death in the sun.

        • You can just say you’ve never been to a canopied stadium and don’t know a damn thing about sports venue design instead of whatever this dumb charade is.

  4. Finally the Sacramento Republic is thinking MLS in the near future. If you build it they will come.

  5. The entitled unrealistic folks coming out stating the desire for a full roof on the stadium is bonkers. Do you live in that much of a controlled environment that you can’t be in the sun / outside during an evening soccer game for 30 minutes before the sun dips? Who wants to watch soccer in a fully indoor air-conditioned stadium anyways!! Such a weird take.

    • It’s even funnier to me because I played indoor soccer for 5-ish years in a warehouse with no AC, and guess what? People still came to watch the games, even during the summer!

    • Such a weird take to consider that anyone who might have a disability, be elderly, etc. would be entitled and unrealistic for wanting to support their soccer team while enjoying a live game in their hometown without getting sick…

  6. Other than the fact that they are skipping an open/close roof function (big mistake), it is magnificent.
