Partial demolition permits have been filed to facilitate the conversion of the La Quinta by Wyndham Hotel into affordable housing at 1390 El Camino Real in Millbrae, San Mateo County. The project hopes to use funds from the statewide Homekey program to create new permanent supportive housing. The Episcopal Community Services of San Francisco will operate the future property and services.
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors purchased the property last September alongside 721 Airport Boulevard in South San Francisco. Both sites are part of their goal to bring more permanent affordable housing to North County. According to the County website, the property was selected based on its “proximity of public transit, good general condition, unit size, and common space to allow for the creation of meeting rooms for onsite supportive services.”
The partial demolition permits will allow for limited removal of walls and other parts of the structure to convert the 100-room hotel into a 75-unit complex with supportive services facilities. Future residents are expected to be families and seniors leaving interim supportive housing.

The property is located along the busy El Camino Real thoroughfare between Center Street and San Jan Avenue. Future residents will be a few blocks away from Broadway. The Millbrae Transit Station will be 12 minutes away via bus or 10 minutes by bicycle.
The full cost of acquisition and renovations is expected to cost around $41 million. The county hopes to secure over $26 million from Homekey. Full occupancy is expected by the end of the year.

SamTrans got rid of the bus stop in by the La Quinta so no nearby bus stop. No permits filed with Millbrae, County filed permits with the county. Yet another sign the county doesn’t know what it is doing. The county did not purchase the hotel, or at least not yet. They have yet to receive Project Homekey funds and grossly over paid for this hotel at 33 million when a La Quinta in SSF sold in Jan 2023 179 rooms for 31 million. I’d say the county is really abusing public funds.
