A proposal will be heard by the City of South San Francisco for the replacement Safeway grocery store at 180 El Camino Real in South San Francisco in San Mateo County. Tomorrow’s meeting will occur over half a decade after the multi-tenant 180 El Camino strip mall was closed in preparation for a transit-oriented mixed-use development that hasn’t materialized. Now, the property has been purchased by SteelWave, and plans are moving ahead.

Shamaim Inc., San Mateo-based Steelwave Acquisitions LLC, and the Pleasanton-based grocer, Safeway Inc, are co-applicants.

The new development will span 74,600 square feet, with 63,690 square feet for the grocery store, 7,930 square feet for shop tenants, and 2,980 square feet for a stand-alone retail pad. A mix of covered and surface parking will be provided for 197 vehicles. The Safeway will reach as high as 42 feet above street level.

Previous plans, named the Centennial Village Development at Spruce and El Camino, were to build 284 new homes, 220,000 square feet of retail, and public space. The proposal had been stalled since 2014.

The new retail hub will cover 3.2 acres, leaving 11.24 acres for construction. Plans have not yet materialized for this future. The Safeway will also rise next to where BDE Architecture and SyRES Properties have proposed 345 residential homes across three structures at 410 Noor Avenue. The application, which includes demolishing the Old Century Theater property, will face a reluctant city planning commission but may be buoyed by pro-housing legislation from the State Capitol.

Lowney Architecture is the project architect, and HMH is the landscape engineer. Sandis is the civil engineer, and Hohbach Lewin the Structural Engineer.

    What is replacing Safeway?
An Lucky’s 1/2 a block from the old shopping center?
Maybe an Trader Joe’s would be equivalent for the community 🤔.
