Construction has topped out for the expansion of the Cordilleras Health Center at 200 Edmonds Road in Redwood City, San Mateo County. The replacement project will expand the county-owned mental health treatment space nestled within two open space preserves on the San Francisco Peninsula. Skanska is the project’s general contractor.

The project is replacing a 1952-built facility originally built as a tuberculosis ward and converted to a behavioral center in 1978. The new facilities will replace the existing 117 beds and add four new beds across 77,610 square feet. Construction will create four single-story buildings, each with 16 beds. The central three-story facility will have a co-living set-up with 57 beds.

In a press release shared after the topping out event, Vice President and Account manager at Skanska, Lindsay Corotis, said, “as healthcare builders and designers, we can directly combat the stigma around seeking care in what was traditionally seen as cold, sterile treatment environments, as we expect to see increased demand for behavioral health facilities. San Mateo County’s Cordilleras Mental Health Center aims to challenge this notion head-on by incorporating nature and sustainability as fundamental to its design, and to the healing process.”

Skanska is the project’s general contractor firm overseeing the project. The firm is aiming to make Cordilleras the largest Behavioral Health Facility in the nation to achieve a net zero-energy footprint. As well, Dusty Robotics devices were used during construction to automate layout design and speed up the process.

CannonDesign is the project architect. The site map will orient the four short structures and the central building around a large landscaped open space. Amenities will include open-air seating, a community garden, and recreation spaces.

The project is estimated to have cost around $150 million. Construction started in late 2020, and completion is expected by the fourth quarter of 2024.
