The Half Moon Bay City Council has approved plans for a proposed hotel at 1200 Main Street in Downtown Half Moon Bay, San Mateo County. The project will bring over a hundred hotel rooms to a former auto dealership after nearly a decade of review. Greg Jamison of RGJC South LLC is the project sponsor.

The City Council unanimously approved the hotel in spite of a recommendation for denial by the city’s Planning Commission. The project has been under review for nearly a decade. The City of Half Moon Bay has adopted the Environmental Impact Report and determined that plans for the 129-key hotel have been approved. Mitigation measures, reporting, and monitoring plans were made as a condition of the approval. The EIR had been informed by over a hundred comment letters submitted in 2022, according to the city.

The proposal will create 102 rooms across 66,270 square feet. Parking will be provided for 108 cars. The project will dedicate two acres of the five-acre property as open space habitat restoration and a natural buffer area. The site plans allow for the potential development of around 16 dwelling units along Seymour Street in the future.

AXIS/GFA Architecture and Design is responsible for drafting the plans. The illustrations show a Farmhouse Modern design language imbued across the complex, influenced by the oceanside city’s rural and agricultural character. Facade materials will include wood board and batten siding, stone panels, board-formed concrete, and metal roofing.

The five-acre property is located at the south end of Main Street, near Highway 1. Future guests will be less than a mile from the town center and a roughly 25-minute walk from Poplar Beach.

Construction is expected to last around a year and a half from groundbreaking to completion. Speaking with Coastside News, the developer shared his plan to start construction within the next five years.

  1. Odd location. I’ll stick with the Ritz.

  2. When HMB has beautiful land possibilities, why in this dumpy unwelcoming location? Anything seems to go.

Hey, you can walk downtown. That’s a nice thing to do. Traffic in HMB is often gridlocked on summer weekends. It’s best to avoid driving as much as possible.

      • That is a good point, but still, I’d like to think a more beautiful hospitality-inspired location would have been possible. Especially in a town where so little gets built.

  3. A decade of review? California is a wonderful place, bur its bureaucracy (both state and local) is ridiculous. And I say that as a liberal!
