Berkeley’s growing neighborhood could soon rise higher. The Berkeley City Council is scheduled to vote today to upzone Southside, a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood dominated by college students and small businesses on the south side of the UC Berkeley Campus. If approved, the rezoning would increase the area’s maximum housing capacity up by over 2,500 dwellings.
The development team tells YIMBY that construction will start next week for the eight-story apartment at 2480 Bancroft Way in Southside, Berkeley. The Edge, as it is called, will overlook the UC Berkeley Campus by the busy Telegraph Avenue intersection. Ruegg & Ellsworth is the project developer.
Demolition permits have been filed for the two-story apartment building at 2435 Haste Street in Southside, Berkeley. Once removed, there are plans to build an eight-story infill with three dozen homes. Kenneth Ent is listed as the property owner.
The UC Board of Regents has dedicated $7 million to kick-start the pre-development of a new student housing complex at 2200 Bancroft Way in Southside, Berkeley. The project will replace a two-story structure and surface parking with a 1,400-bed dormitory to satisfy the city’s insatiable demand for housing UC Berkeley students.
The Berkeley Design Review Committee is scheduled to review plans for the eight-story residential infill at 2480 Bancroft Way in Southside, Berkeley. The project, named ‘The Edge,’ will create 28 large apartments directly across from the UC Berkeley campus, designed to meet the city’s high demand for student living.
