Plans for Affordable Housing To Replace Surface Parking, San Francisco

New Building permits have been filed for two affordable infills with a total of 272 apartments at 1633 Valencia Street and 3485 Cesar Chavez Street at the border of Bernal Heights and the Mission District of San Francisco. One permit is listed as a priority under the San Francisco Mayor’s Office’s Executive Directive 13-01, designed by Mayor Ed Lee in 2013 to expedite the approval process for designated plans. Mercy Housing is developing 1633 Valencia Street, and Sequoia Living is developing 3485 Cesar Chavez Street.

Cranes and rising concrete have only started to divulge the scale of the 405-acre vision, nearly three decades in the making, that will redevelop San Francisco’s storied artificial island with a mixed-use urban neighborhood populated by around eight thousand homes. The Treasure Island Community Development joint venture sponsors the project.

The preliminary project assessment application has been filed for a nine-story affordable housing proposal at 1515 South Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco’s Mission District. The plans use the State Density Bonus program to create 170 new homes just two blocks from BART. The Chinatown Community Development Center and the Mission Economic Development Agency are joint developers.

Brookfield Properties has released new renderings for the $2 billion master plan to redevelop the surface parking of the Stonestown Galleria mall on the west side of San Francisco. The new illustrations compare current conditions at the mall with the proposal. The development would transform the retail center into a vibrant town center and neighborhood destination with housing and open space.
