For the last twelve days of 2023, SF YIMBY will look back on each month and reflect on the biggest stories we covered. October’s highlight was the joint announcement for a future $2 billion research center by UC Berkeley and NASA in the Ames Center in Mountain View. In San Francisco, YIMBY documented affordable housing rising in SoMa and the Sunset District, while Related Companies celebrated their ribbon cutting for a nine-story affordable complex by the Balboa Park BART Station.

October 3rd: Increased plans have been submitted for an eight-story apartment complex at 842 California Street on Nob Hill, San Francisco. The new proposal, now two floors taller, will create 30 for-ownership apartments with four moderately affordable units. Acme Development is responsible for the application as project sponsor.

Affordable Housing Opens By Balboa Park BART Station, San Francisco

October 6th: The project team and city officials gathered last week to celebrate the grand opening of Kapuso at the Upper Yard, a nine-story affordable housing project at 2340 San Jose Avenue in San Francisco’s Outer Mission neighborhood. The project has created 131 low- to moderate-income family homes on public land owned by BART and developed in partnership with Related and the Mission Housing Development Corporation. State Senator Scott Wiener, author of Senate Bill 35, which provided Kapuso a clear path for approval, attended the event.

October 9th: Concrete has passed the halfway point for the new affordable housing complex rising at 600 7th Street in SoMa, San Francisco. The project, named 7th and Brannan, is among the biggest active sites in the city, with over 221 units to be opened once complete. Mercy Housing is the project developer.

Renderings Revealed For New Hotel By Santana Row, San Jose

October 13th: New renderings have been revealed alongside environmental review documents for a proposed hotel at 425 South Winchester Boulevard by Santana Row, San Jose. A preliminary application was filed last year, but the new plans provide a detailed glimpse into how the gas station could be replaced with a seven-story infill. KT Urban is responsible for the application.

UC Berkeley Announces $2 Billion Space Center At NASA Ames Research Center

October 17th: New plans have been revealed for a $2 billion research center run by UC Berkeley at the NASA Ames Center in Mountain View, Santa Clara County. The Berkeley Space Center, as it will be called, will reshape 36 acres on the sprawling Ames Research Center, providing a hub for future companies to collaborate with the school and NASA scientists & engineers to improve technology for aviation, space exploration, and how people live and work in space.

October 18th: New renderings have been published for the proposed 17-story apartment tower at 2420 Shattuck Avenue in Downtown Berkeley, Alameda County. The project is the second tallest of nine plans by the same developer that would create dense urban infills across Berkeley. Nathan George of NX Ventures is responsible for the application.

October 23rd: New elevations have been published for the double-tower proposal at 655 4th Street in SoMa, San Francisco. The project is one of the largest in the city’s pipeline, aiming to create over a thousand apartments on 1.6 acres directly across from Caltrain’s San Francisco Station. Tishman Speyer, the same company behind the nearby Mission Rock master development, is the project sponsor.

October 26th: Preliminary plans have been filed for a larger apartment complex at 650 Divisadero Street by Alamo Square in San Francisco. The application will create a nine-story apartment complex with nearly a hundred affordable units two blocks from the Panhandle. Jonathan Rose Companies is the project developer.

Construction Topped Out For Affordable Educator Housing In The Sunset District

October 30th: Just over a year after the official groundbreaking ceremony, crews have topped out the five-story affordable educator housing development at 1360 43rd Avenue in San Francisco’s Sunset District. The Shirley Chisholm Village has replaced a former school and outdoor yard with the low-rise apartment infill designed by BAR Architects with G7A. MidPen Housing is the project developer, and Cahill is the general contractor.
