Art Gensler, the founder and namesake for the global architecture firm, passed away in Marin County on May 10th, 2021, at age 85. The San Francisco-based architect founded Gensler with his wife Drue Gensler and their associate, James Follett, in 1965. Over the decades, Gensler has grown to be consistently ranked among the largest studios in the world since the 0s and has worked on many projects that have shaped the Bay Area’s built environment.

The 476-foot tall office building at 45 Fremont Street is tied as the 37th tallest building in the Bay Area planned or built. The low-profile tower was completed in 1978 by Shorenstein Properties, one of the city’s most prominent landlords, and involved with three other properties already featured on the SFYIMBY Tallest 52 Towers countdown.

Planning Commission to Review Adaptive Reuse of 48 Stockton Street, Tenderloin, San Francisco

Development plans are under consideration for the adaptive reuse of 48 Stockton Street, i.e., the Barneys Building, in Tenderloin, San Francisco. The proposal is to convert the existing retail hub to part-retail and part-offices across from 2 Stockton, 100 Stockton, and Union Square. Strada Investment Group is the sponsor responsible for the development.

Plans Under Review For 200 West Washington Avenue, Sunnyvale

Development permits are under review seeking the approval of two seven- story office buildings with retail space at 200 West Washington Avenue, Sunnyvale. The project proposal includes the construction of two office buildings with flex spaces, parking and shared services. Gensler is managing the design concepts and construction of the project.

Design Review Today for 600 Addison Street, Southwest Berkeley

Developers will be presenting the preliminary design review for the 845,590 square foot research campus at 600 Addison Street later tonight to the Berkeley Design Review Committee. The project will add a new campus for medical research in the Southwest Berkeley neighborhood, overlooking Aquatic Park. Lane Partners and LB2 Partners are developing as a joint venture.

Oakland’s Jack London Square Ballpark Masterplan Could Host Second Tallest Tower in City

Recently published documents by the City of Oakland show that the Oakland Waterfront Ballpark District project could see two 600-foot towers beside the 35,000-person ballpark. If fabricated today, they would be the tallest skyscrapers in California outside of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Hines’ 622-foot proposal for Oakland at 415 20th Street is the only proposal that would be taller. The Oakland A’s are the project developer and sponsor, operating through the Oakland Athletics Investment Group LLC.

Construction has topped out for the U-shaped five-story Element Hotel by Marriott, confirmed by a recent site visit to the property at 1130 Champions Drive in Newhall, San Jose. The new building will span 115,000 square feet, producing 175 guest rooms immediately opposite the San Jose Earthquakes soccer stadium and the city’s international airport. The project, led by Nexus Development, is part of a much larger mixed-use plan, the Coleman Highline.

Gensler Tells SFYIMBY About Moment 2.0 Concept Proposal for Downtown San Jose Garage

One of the most inspiring challenges for urban planners is how to reintegrate overbuilt vehicle infrastructure into the city’s fabric. Gensler shows one solution for evolving these elements in a recent publication, even when there is an enduring necessity. As mass-transit is being improved and surface parking redeveloped across downtown San Jose, this process will increase the need for building like the San Pedro Market Parking Garage at 45 North San Pedro Street. Over the last year, Gensler’s San Jose offices noticed that the garage roof was often carless and was encouraged to see people visit and enjoy the space. Moment 2.0 is the firm’s response to this observation, a visual illustration that imagines a community environment they hope to see built.

Development Permits Under Review for 550 East Brokaw Road, North San Jose

Plans for a high-density seven-building office development are currently under review for 550 East Brokaw Road in North San Jose. The proposal will create approximately two million square feet of office space and about 858,000 square feet of parking area on-site, tripling the existing built area. Bay West Development is responsible for the proposal.

Developers Win Lawsuit for New BIG-Design Oakland A’s Stadium

New A’s stadium at Oakland’s Howard Terminal clears Senate and now progresses toward reality. Assemblyman Rob Bontas (D-Oakland) AB 1191 passed the Senate 34-0. The proposal includes a new ballpark to be built at the Howard Terminal in Jack London Square in Oakland.
