Historic Review Published for Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco

The San Francisco Symphony is looking to reconstruct its existing concert hall with a new interior designed by Gehry Partners, one of the best modern architects of concert halls. New permits have been filed for the project, and the city has published a new historic resource review on the Davies Symphony Hall in the Civic Center. The review concludes that, given its young age, “the building is not yet eligible for listing” as a historic building in the national or state registers.

Demolition Underway for UC Parnassus Heights Hospital and Research Building

Demolition and excavation work is underway for two major projects in the UCSF Parnassus Heights campus in San Francisco. Crews finished removing the seven-story UC Hall, and only a corner of the four-story Mental Health Services building remains as of our visit. The sites are expected to be transformed into a research building and hospital, with both scheduled to finish by 2028 and 2030, respectively.

Renovation Proposed by Literary Non-Profit for 556 Commercial Street, Financial District, San Francisco

New plans have been filed to create a bookstore and event space inside the 115-year-old brick building at 556 Commercial Street in San Francisco’s Financial District. The application was filed on behalf of the Center for the Art of Translation, the property owner and a non-profit literary community that promotes and supports literary translation and translators.

UC Berkeley Announces $2 Billion Space Center At NASA Ames Research Center

New plans have been revealed for a $2 billion research center run by UC Berkeley at the NASA Ames Center in Mountain View, Santa Clara County. The Berkeley Space Center, as it will be called, will reshape 36 acres on the sprawling Ames Research Center, providing a hub for future companies to collaborate with the school and NASA scientists & engineers to improve technology for aviation, space exploration, and how people live and work in space.

Significant San Francisco Symphony Hall Renovation Proposed

The San Francisco Symphony has started the entitlement process for renovations of the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall at 201 Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco’s Civic Center. While plans are preliminary, the Symphony has hired local Mark Cavagnero Associates and the world-renowned Gehry Partners to produce a dramatic reimagination inside and out. Construction is expected to cost at least $100 million.

New Carpenter’s Union Hall Proposed by India Basin, San Francisco

Renderings have been revealed for a new two-story Carpenter’s Union Hall at 3433 3rd Street by San Francisco’s India Basin. The project will create a new office and assembly space for the Carprtner Local Union 22 members. Equity Community Builders and Badiner Urban Planning are collaborating on the application.

Renderings for Affordable Housing at 2530 18th Street in Mission District, San Francisco

New renderings have been published alongside an updated construction timeline for 2530 18th Street in San Francisco’s Mission District. The development will create a new home for the Homeless Prenatal Program resource agency and 73 new affordable homes. HPP is working with the developer Mercy Housing. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2024.

The densely packed six-story institutional facility will create new community space, including a two-level Saint Patrick’s Room banquet hall, offices, and a public gallery.

Construction has topped out for the expansion of the Cordilleras Health Center at 200 Edmonds Road in Redwood City, San Mateo County. The replacement project will expand the county-owned mental health treatment space nestled within two open space preserves on the San Francisco Peninsula. Skanska is the project’s general contractor.

Construction Starts for SOM-Designed Bechtel Engineering Center, UC Berkeley Campus

UC Berkeley has celebrated the official groundbreaking for their latest campus expansion, the UC Berkeley Engineering Center. The $95 million project makes adaptive reuse of the existing building, transforming the concrete structure into a prominent lightweight glass and steel skin centerpiece designed by Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill. The new engineering center is expected to open in Berkeley by early 2025.
