A pre-application has been filed for a 26-story residential tower at 1974 Shattuck Avenue. If approved, it would become the tallest building in Downtown Berkeley, and among the tallest residential buildings in Alameda County. The proposal aims to produce 297 new homes and a rooftop restaurant with views across the Bay Area. The application is led by NX Ventures, Rhoades Planning Group, and Trachtenberg Architects.
Partial demolition is the likely fate for the California Theatre at 2113 Kittredge Street in Downtown Berkeley. The over century-old theater was closed last year as the property owners now look to redevelop with housing, and reporting suggests the project could be around fifteen stories tall. Gilbane Development is sponsoring the project.
Construction is wrapping up for Berkeley’s largest 100% affordable housing project at 2012 Berkeley Way. The project, dubbed Berkeley Way, will add a mix of affordable housing, permanent supportive housing, and a new 44-bed shelter. BRIDGE Housing and the Berkeley Food & Housing Project are jointly responsible for the development.
Significant progress has been made on Modera Berkeley since YIMBY visited in March of last year. Facade installation on all four structures has finished in Downtown Berkeley, with the MacFarlane Building now open with its first retail tenant, Citibank, while leasing has been underway since early 2021. Florida-based Mill Creek is responsible for the 205-unit development.
Preliminary permits have been filed for a nine-story residential infill at 2847 Shattuck Avenue in South Berkeley. The proposal would create 112 new homes with some affordable units nearby mass transit and directly across from the city’s famed grocery destination, Berkeley Bowl. Trachtenberg Architects is listed as responsible for the design.
