For the last twelve days of the year, SF YIMBY will look back on each month and share the biggest stories we covered. March was the month of construction updates across the East Bay, San Francisco, and San Mateo County. Crews started on the new CCA campus in San Francisco, a new Life Sciences complex started to rise across from the Millbrae Station, and several urban infills were spotted rising in Berkeley. In Downtown Oakland, YIMBY visited the peak of Behring Co’s 39-story apartment tower.
Groundbreaking For Avia Labs Across From Millbrae Transit Center
March 2nd: The official groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday afternoon for Avia Labs, a new life sciences project at 210 Adrian Road in Millbrae, San Mateo County. Once complete, the six-story project will open up in a burgeoning district, with direct access to the Millbrae BART and Caltrain Station through an underpass. Longfellow Real Estate Partners is the project sponsor.
Construction At 2359 Harrison Street In Northgate-Waverly, Oakland
March 3rd: Construction has reached the fifth floor of the 330-unit apartment complex at 2359 Harrison Street in Northgate-Waverly, Oakland. The project, led by Holland Partner Group, has already demolished surface parking and low-slung commercial structures. The tower is rising across from Vespr, another project by the same developer.
Extension Request For Office-To-Hotel Conversion Of Hearst Building, San Francisco
March 4th: An extension request has been filed for plans to convert the Hearst Building offices into a 170-key hotel at 5 Third Street in SoMa, San Francisco. The plans will affect three buildings on the site, including the 13-story Hearst Building, 17-29 Third Street, and the Stevenson Street annex. Bespoke Hospitality is the project sponsor.
Construction Underway For California College Of The Arts Expansion In San Francisco
March 9th: Steel and wood have started to rise for the California College of the Arts expansion at 1140 7th Street in San Francisco. The new facilities, named Double Ground, allow CCA to close its Oakland campus and consolidate into the Design District neighborhood with a new landmark addition designed by the renowned Chicago-based architecture firm, Studio Gang. The new construction will integrate exposed concrete and mass timber within a new creative complex at the core of the urban campus.
YIMBY Visits Topping Out For 1900 Broadway, Downtown Oakland Tower
March 13th: Construction has topped out with facade installation nearly complete for the 39-story mixed-use tower at 1900 Broadway in Downtown Oakland, Alameda County. An official ceremony was held yesterday morning, attended by the project team and construction workers. Behring Companies is the project developer, with Suffolk as the general contractor.
Meeting Today For 7 South Linden Avenue, South San Francisco
March 16th: New renderings have been revealed ahead of the Planning Commission review of 7 South Linden Avenue, a seven-story residential proposal in South San Francisco, San Mateo County. The transit-adjacent project is expected to create 543 homes by the South San Francisco Caltrain Station while expanding the burgeoning urban growth of the downtown area further south. Essex Property Trust is the project developer.
Meeting Today For Former CCA Campus At 5200 Broadway In Oakland
March 22nd: The Oakland Planning Commission is scheduled to review reduced plans for the former Oakland Campus for the California College of Arts at 5200 Broadway in Rockridge, Alameda County. The residential capacity has been reduced from 510 to 448 units while preserving the Treadwell Estate with Macky Hall and the Carriage House. Emerald Fund and Equity Community Builders are the project sponsors.
Construction Tops Out For 2590 Bancroft Way In Southside, Berkeley
March 23rd: Construction has topped out for the eight-story residential infill at 2590 Bancroft Way in Southside, Berkeley. The project, dubbed Bancroft Hub, will open 87 new units directly across from the UC Berkeley Campus by the fall of next year. Core Spaces is the project developer.
Meeting Thursday For 38-Story Tower At 98 Franklin Street, San Francisco
March 27th: Amended plans will be reviewed for 98 Franklin Street during the San Francisco Planning Commission Hearing this Thursday. The alterations were first revealed in mid-November with an additional floor, higher rooftop, and increased residential capacity from 345 to 385 units in The Hub. Affordable housing needs have also been shifted offsite to Parcel K in Hayes Valley and 600 Van Ness Avenue. Related and the French American International School are jointly responsible for the project.
New Renderings For California Theater Tower In Downtown Berkeley
March 30th: New renderings have been revealed for the 17-story mixed-use tower expected to rise from the California Theater at 2115 Kittredge Street in Downtown Berkeley, Alameda County. The updated plan shows how the historic facade will be preserved with a new theater for live performances capped by 218 apartments. Gilbane Development is responsible for the project.
New UC Dorm Rising In Downtown Berkeley
March 31st: Concrete has reached the 10th floor of the Helen Diller Anchor House, a mixed-use student dorm for UC Berkeley at 1921 Walnut Street in Downtown Berkeley, Alameda County. The $300 million project is rapidly approaching its 14-floor peak, with plans for 772 apartment-style bedrooms and university facilities. Morris Adjmi Architects is responsible for the design.
