For the last twelve days of 2025, SFYIMBY will reflect on the biggest stories we’ve covered each month across the region. In June, updated plans were unveiled for One Oak; renderings were released for the 23-story affordable development in Mission Bay; and a low-income senior housing project was proposed for the Laguna Honda hospital campus. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for three different affordable housing projects in Berkeley and San Francisco, and Prado Group received approval for revised plans to construct 530 units across five acres in Presidio Heights.

June 1st: The City of Oakland’s Planning and Building Department has approved development permits for an eight-story mixed-use building on a vacant parking lot in Downtown Oakland. The narrow parking lot is located at 585 17th Street, between Clay and Jefferson. Developers FH1 Investments have brought in BDE Architecture for the project design.

June 3rd: A site in Downtown San Jose could become a new AI research and development center, with elements of both a data center and office laboratory. Arena Investors seized the property at 199 Bassett Street after a foreclosure in 2022, and are now floating a proposal for the development of an eight-story tech hub designed by C2K Architects.

Mixed Use Development Narrowly Approved in Los Gatos

June 10th: The Los Gatos City Council voted 3-2 in favor of moving forward on a large mixed-use development located at 143-151 East Main Street, just across the street from Los Gatos High School in Santa Clara County. Earlier this year SF YIMBY covered the state environmental approvals for the developments, and the project has now swiftly moved to full approval by the city government.

June 11th: Resources for Community Development has opened a six-story and 87-unit project located at 2001 Ashby Avenue in South Berkeley. The project, named after Councilwoman Maudelle Miller Shirek, was first brought in 2021, with ground-breaking occurring in 2022. Delays caused the building to overshoot its projected opening date in 2024, but the project has now made it to completion and is moving in tenants.

June 11th: Preliminary permits have been filed for an affordable housing development at 250 Laguna Honda Boulevard in Forest Hill, San Francisco. The proposal looks to create an eight-story apartment complex with 172 rental units on the parcel currently occupied by a mid-century modern church. Mission Housing Development Corporation is the project sponsor.

June 13th: Following a project proposal originally brought in 2020, revised project approvals have come through for the partial demolition and redevelopment of a 4.9-acre site at 3700 California Street in San Francisco. The new approvals are under a different architect and developer, who have decided to keep with the same geographic scope of the previous plan, but are seizing upon a more ambitious project model. The proposal brought by Prado Group would bring an injection of 530 new housing units to the area between Pac Heights and the Inner Richmond neighborhoods. BDE Architecture is responsible for the new designs.

June 16th: Construction has officially started for the six-story affordable housing complex at 1701 San Pablo Avenue in Northwest Berkeley, Alameda County. The groundbreaking ceremony was held by the Berkeley Unified School District in partnership with the non-profit developers Abode Communities and Satellite Affordable Housing Associates. Once complete, the project will offer over a hundred units for educators in the city.

June 16th: Planning progress and new renderings have been published for the proposed 41-story tower at One Oak in San Francisco’s Market & Octavia Area Plan, formerly known as The Hub. The latest documents show a modified design scheme by SCB, as well as a minor increase in unit count since the project was revived by the property owner last year. The Emerald Fund is responsible for the application on behalf of the owner, Washington Capital.

June 19th: The Santa Clara Housing Authority, Eden Housing, and Core Companies have been jointly responsible for the planning and development of a large-scale project located at 675 East Santa Clara Street, near Downtown San Jose. The multi-acre site will encompass a variety of projects to be developed over multiple phases. One of the projects, named Trillium Senior Housing, took a major step forward this week with the posting of a Notice of Exemption allowing the building to expedite its environmental approvals.

June 19th: The official groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday morning by MidPen Housing to celebrate the construction of 167 units of affordable housing at 750 Golden Gate Avenue and 850 Turk Street in San Francisco’s Fillmore District. The ceremony was held at 750 Golden Gate Avenue, where the first floor of concrete is already complete. One block away, demolition work is nearly complete at 850 Turk Street.

June 21st: Preliminary plans have been filed for a six-story infill project at 926 Natoma Street in SoMa, San Francisco. Project plans shared with the application show renderings of a narrow infill rising six floors with six rental apartments. MASK Properties LLC is listed as the project sponsor.

June 26th: Initial renderings have been revealed for a dense residential project at Mission Bay Block 4 East in the Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco. The proposal will create four hundred affordable apartments across two structures, rising 16 stories and 23 stories respectively across two phases. Curtis Development and Bayview Senior Services are the joint developers.

June 30th: The initial review process has been closed for an affordable housing proposal at 375 Laguna Honda Boulevard, next to the Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco. The eye-catching proposal aims to construct over two hundred apartments across a circular six-story master plan for low-income seniors adjacent to a publicly funded medical institution. Mercy Housing is responsible for the application.
