UC Berkeley has celebrated the official groundbreaking for their latest campus expansion, the UC Berkeley Engineering Center. The $95 million project makes adaptive reuse of the existing building, transforming the concrete structure into a prominent lightweight glass and steel skin centerpiece designed by Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill. The new engineering center is expected to open in Berkeley by early 2025.
Construction has started for Mission Paradise, a four-story affordable housing infill rising at 28000 Mission Boulevard in Hayward, Alameda County. The project will create 76 units for seniors residents earning between 20-80% of the Area’s Median Income. EAH Housing is the project developer.
Construction crews started work soon after building permits were issued for the five-story residential development at 685 9th Street in Downtown Oakland, Alameda County. The infill is replacing a vacant commercial structure and parking with 117 homes, including some affordable housing. Riaz Capital is the property owner.
The pre-application has been filed for a new eight-story residential infill at 2660 Bancroft Way and the adaptive reuse of the Bancroft Hotel at 2680 Bancroft Way in Berkeley’s Southside neighborhood. The plans will add over a hundred homes directly across from UC Berkeley. Daryl Ross, the owner of Bancroft Hotel, is listed as the property owner.
The Oakland A’s could leave California for Las Vegas as early as 2027. This news follows the announcement by the team president of a recent land deal in Las Vegas. The A’s have been actively working with the city for roughly two decades to move from their existing coliseum, though they have been publicly courting Las Vegas starting in 2021. The move would leave Oakland with no remaining major league sports teams.
