Affordable Housing Conversion Planned for 1035 Van Ness in San Francisco

A proposed project in San Francisco would convert an existing 106-unit residential building at 1035 Van Ness Avenue into a 124-unit fully affordable building. The units will be classified as Affordable Permanent Supportive Housing, a model combining affordable housing with supportive services to help individuals with disabilities or special circumstances preventing them from finding long-term housing. The project is brought by the veteran-focused non-profit Swords to Plowshares.

The proposal would replace a single-story commercial structure with 107 new apartments. The Young Community Developer and Jonathan Rose Companies are jointly sponsoring the project in partnership with MOHCD.

The San Francisco Planning Commission is scheduled to review plans for the 41-story mixed-use tower to be built at 530 Sansome Street in San Francisco’s Financial District. The project, showing unlikely optimism in commercial real estate for the city, looks to add nearly half a million square feet of office space, a hotel, and a new fire station for the SFFD. Related California and the City are jointly responsible for the project in a public-private partnership.

The application was initially filed in 2013 to replace the two-story Canton Dim Sum House restaurant with a 14-story apartment complex. The structure has remained six years after the previously announced 2019 groundbreaking by developer Pillar Capital Group.
