New, Shorter Proposal Revealed for Emeryville Site of Once-Planned ‘Tallest Tower in East Bay’

Filed in 2018, plans by Onni Group and IBI Group proposed a 638-foot tall apartment tower and a 16-story office building that would launch Emeryville, a dense city between Berkeley and Oakland, into the Bay Area’s skyline. Eventually, plans for the tower were withdrawn in 2020. Now, a new developer expects to build at 5801-5861 Christie Avenue, but with a significantly reduced profile.

The Conditional Use Authorization permit has been filed by the developers for 465 Grove Street, with plans for a new mixed-use building in Hayes Valley, San Francisco. The proposal will demolish the existing Days Inn Hotel and a neighboring residential structure along Grove Street. Construction will include replacements for the housing, SRO rooms, and expand the hotel function on-site from 36 to 100 guest rooms.

Today, Santa Clara’s Development Review Hearing is scheduled to review plans for Clara Gardens, a fully affordable residential complex at 3550 El Camino Real. The housing proposal will preserve an existing hotel and replace surface parking with a seven-story apartment building. Berkeley-based RCD Housing is responsible for the project as the property owner.
