Demolition Starts for 1510 Webster Street, Downtown Oakland

Crews have started preparing for the demolition of a four-story structure ahead of construction of the 19-story apartment block at 1510 Webster Street in Downtown Oakland, Alameda County. Helped by an updated California Building Code passed in 2021, 1510 Webster is expected to be the second tallest wooden tower in the country. Oakland-based oWOW is the project developer and architect.

State Launches Investigation For San Francisco’s Lengthy Approval Process

San Francisco takes longer than any other city in California to approve new housing. For this reason, the State of California’s Department of Housing and Community Development has launched its first-ever investigation with the Housing Accountability Unit. According to the HCD, the team will be “identifying and removing barriers to approval and construction of new housing there.”

Modified Plan Passes Review For Millennium Tower Pile Upgrade Project

Following a recent inquiry, YIMBY has received an update from the Millennium Tower team about the progress of modifications to the original foundation in SoMa, San Francisco. Crews finished the installation of 18 piles by early 2022. Now, crews are working to tie the piles into the building. As for what this will do for the Millennium Tower, the principal engineer of the fix, Ronald Hamburger, says this work will “arrest its settlement and begin recovering tilt that has occurred.”
